Your sofa is one of the most used parts of your home and for many households it becomes more than just a place to sit. It can be a place to dine while catching up with your favourite soap, a makeshift fort for your children to play in and even a bed for your pet to sleep; all these things make your sofa a prime spot for germs, dust, hair and grime to accumulate.
Sofas can also be one of the toughest places in your home to clean, so weíve put together some hints and tips professional domestic cleaners to help you keep your sofa in ship shape:
Make the most of your hooverís attachments
Taking a minute to vacuum your sofa cushions when you are cleaning your floors takes seconds, your vacuum is likely to have come with plenty of handy attachment, make sure you use these to not only clean the surface of your cushions, but get stuck in behind them too.
This will reduce the amount of dirt getting ground in to the fabric or leather and prevent dust and crumbs building up between cushions .
Always follow the manufacturers instructions for cleaning your sofa.
Many sofas may require a little more attention, for instance manufacturers may recommend you use a leather care kit to keep your sofa looking great if your sofa is made from specialist leathers. You often find manufacturer recommendations on your sofaís label or in a separate care pack supplied when you first purchased it. Be sure to follow these recommendations, otherwise you may inadvertently damage your sofa when trying to clean it.
Don't use detergents or baby wipes to clean leather sofas.
Although it may be tempting to clean your leather sofa with softer detergents, soaps or even baby wipes, we strong recommend you avoid these practices. Many of these products contain oils, waxes or silicones that can ruin the finish of your leather. Although it may be a little more expensive, we recommend using water based foam cleaners specially designed for leather. These will keep your sofa looking great for much longer. Use a warm damp cloth to mop up small spillages, be sure to dab the area and not wipe this will only serve to permanently discolour or stain the leather.
Clean up any spills immediately.
You can often avoid permanently staining your sofa if you clean up spills and dirt before they have the chance to fully absorb into the upholstery, making sure to follow manufacturerís recommendations to avoid damaging your sofa.
Use a machine washable throw
Be sure to cover your sofa with a machine washable throw while your children or pets are sitting on it, itís much easier to throw these in the washing machine than it is to clean your sofaís upholstery and will be sure to extend the life of your sofa.
